Alta Verapaz y Baja Verapaz are the two provinces known as Las Verapaces. This beautiful territory is home to 42 species of orchids, the National Bird: The Quetzal and other exotic animals and plants that grow wild. Here you will find incredible ecological reserves and natural marvels in a region that offers diversity of climates.

Climate: The climate is mild with rain for the most part of the year. The minimum temperature is between 10 º – 13º C (50 º – 55 º F). The maximum temperature is between 24º - 28 º C (75 º – 82 º F).

Main urban centers: Cobán and Salamá.

Distance from Guatemala City to Cobán: 219 km. / 136 miles

Access: The most convenient is by land since they have an excellent highway.

Here you will find trails through 2,903.49 acres of cloud forest and mountains that reach 7,545.93 feet above sea level. More than 50 species of trees constitute the habitat of the exotic Quetzal, the national bird of Guatemala.

Lachúa Lagoon

This is a beautiful, calming spot with blue and crystalline waters in a near-circular shape lake, completely surrounded by dense tropical forest. Its waters are alkaline with high sulphur content. With a protected area of 35,830.28 acres is the home of abundant wildlife and it’s easy to see jaguar, tapirs, toucans and other exotic birds.
